CONTENT:
The focus of the blog is transformation through the telling of living planet mystery tales. I write primarily about my history and experiences in Nature, broadly speaking. Sometimes I mention current events. I like “describing” the ineffable through metaphor. I delete posts frequently and constantly revise.
OVERVIEW:
As you can tell from the URL in your browser, you’re actually visiting JHFarr.com, my primary Web site of which this is a part. FarrFeed files reside in a separate directory inside this one.
FarrFeed uses the latest WordPress software and runs from a database associated with the JHFarr.com domain, using a heavily customized Binary Blue theme to integrate stylistically with the surrounding HTML-based site.
You may have noticed that the header rollover image above links to the FarrFeed main page. But if you click on the Writing, Audio, or Media Info links (top right corner of every page), you’ll actually jump to the root directory, where the header rollovers take you to the JHFarr.com splash page. The same thing goes for Photos, actually FotoFeed.com, a separate site running under its own domain.
The blog has gone through several incarnations, beginning with a Salon.com blog in 2002. In 2006, FarrFeed moved to the WordPress platform and was completely redesigned. This version of the blog continued until mid-2007, at which time the current version was introduced. (No material from the earlier versions is available online at this time.)
SPECIAL FEATURES:
The section with the same name in the sidebar menu links to static WordPress pages inside FarrFeed. You can buy a book, download PDFs and audio files, or end up here.
There’s a hidden feature, too: to view the “original” (WordPress) FarrFeed header image, just click on the “FARRFEED” text at the top of any page. You’ll see a mysterious composite banner with a photo of the author as a two-year-old (?) at Tolchester Beach in Kent County, MD. that fades to a glimpse of the view outside our front door in New Mexico.
Going strong since the summer of ‘06
HARDWARE/SOFTWARE:
All work on this blog is done on a Mac, currently a 1.83 GHz Intel MacBook with two gigs of RAM running OS X 10.5. As already noted, this is a WordPress blog. All graphic work is done in Photoshop CS3, and I stole the rollover code for the header image from Dreamweaver.
POSSIBLE BUG: FarrFeed may not play nice with some versions of Internet Explorer, even though the blog utilizes a special packet of javascripts for IE compatibility. The issue is CSS handling. If you see a white page background outside of the black, that’s wrong: it should be dark gray.
