Welcome to FarrFeed

It must drive feed subscribers nuts when I delete posts, which I do quite often. Apparently the content is still out there for a while (12 hours?), even if I thought I’d disappeared it. And if you try to find it later, you get a 404 error!

But it is a shame that comments disappear with the posts. A new visitor to FarrFeed had said some truthful things that deserved a longer life than just a couple of hours, and I regret that. These things happen because no one should ever blog when insane, yet so many people do. Go figure.

I finally figured out that once somebody left a comment, he or she was thereafter “greeted” when returning to the site. You know, “WELCOME BACK, ADOLF!” or whatever. It happened to me after I logged out to test the comment formatting from the user’s perspective. When I returned to the site, there it was, big as day.

Declaring this to be sucky, I removed the following code from a page called “theloop.php.”

See? This stuff isn’t hard.

So now you won’t be greeted any more. I hope you’re not too upset.

Okay, I’m FTPing like a sonofabitch. Watch out, things may get a little wonky here for a while… [transfer files, transfer files] Hey, that worked fine! Cool. You are now reading FarrFeed running on WordPress 2.5.

The “write post” interface sucks, though. This version may drive me to MarsEdit, after all.

Posting will be light to non-existent until the metaphysics improve. Indeed, saying anything at all would be stupid and dangerous. I’m sure you understand.

For anyone who doesn’t know, the header photo at the top of this page is a rollover image. Just mouse over it and see. It’s always that way, with different pictures when I feel like it. Case in point, the current image: Johnny on great-uncle Herbert’s cow, somewhere in New Hampshire in about 1948. That’s Mrs. Ebsworth, his housekeeper, behind us.

On the rollover is me in Middle River, MD a little later that same year, I think. What a great attitude!

The spatial distortion is just the first step. I’m not normal, remember. Hell, if this stuff were good enough to draw more people than it does, someone would be interviewing me about the outrageous brilliance of a concealed rainbow in a land that never was. See?

Okay, that isn’t so brilliant except on a small screen. Meanwhile, here’s something with a more highly developed paradox that gives it great power — you have to read the description, however.

Having some fun here, as you can see. I’m not sure if the column scrolling against the fixed background makes me dizzy, or if I’m just not quite over my cold. Sometimes just staring at the screen too long gives me a headache. Anyway, chime in if you want.

Whoa, I think the mix of different depths is what’s giving me a fit! I kinda like it, though.

All right, let’s lighten up.

Man, do I need to lighten up. I can’t believe all the things I’ve been wasting energy on. For someone who thinks he knows a thing or two about what’s what, I sure can get tangled up in what’s not. Don’t do that, you hear?

Been out with an actual cold or some such, too. Don’t do that either! I have no idea how this happened. I “never” get sick, remember. It’s unearthy, which may explain why I’m at the coughing-up-hideous-alien-life-forms stage. Maybe I’ll be able to get out in the morning and take more pictures for FotoFeed if we have breakfast at the diner for bait. I wonder if I could taste it, in my condition.

[cough, hack]

Be glad you didn’t hear that. Back soon!

Okayyyy… got a little bit behind — very cold (zero!), very intense here — but FotoFeed (”Photos” link at top right) is now updated. In fact, the rollover image above is the current picture. If you’re a FotoFeed fan, you know to use the “Day Before” and “Back” links to work your way back through the photos I just uploaded.

I don’t know what most people do on Saturday night, but I just upgraded the blog to WordPress 2.3. This is supposed to be rather wonderful, though most of the new stuff is under the hood, so to speak. I also installed a brand-new plugin that automatically reformats FarrFeed content for your iPhone or iPod touch. Don’t have an iPhone, so I can’t test it. If you do, just enter the URL and let me know if it’s working. Supposedly any images are automatically scaled down to fit, too.

UPDATE: Apparently the images don’t come through on the iPhone formatting. I suspect this is due to the fact that I give the images an absolute URL, a habit I got into during my early days of blogging. I’ll have to check the plugin code and the special theme for the iPhone version to see where it expects to find my JPEGs, and then see if I can get everyone to agree on an image path. But man, they would be so small.
