All of a sudden, it’s summer — or is it only spring?
Less than a week after building a roaring fire in the woodstove, we now have temperatures in the 80s, and for the last few days, we haven’t had any wind! That in itself is startling, because we’ve been absolutely hammered by high winds all spring. It always does that here, sometimes more, sometimes less, but you have to understand that we haven’t been able to be outside at all, at least in a recreational sense, until a few days ago. Snow, ice, mud, wind, then BANG: I can walk outside in my shorts! Absolutely no gradation from one extreme to the other.
You know how 72 degrees Fahrenheit is supposed to be just perfect? Well, the day before yesterday, it was 72 degrees with 12 percent humidity, and that was, well, perfect. More than perfect, actually, because this came with incredible visibility all the way to the razor-sharp horizon. Such things have to be experienced to be believed.
UPDATE: Well, that didn’t last long!

You look quite benign and contented, my boy. If there was a law against looking too good, we’d have to arrest you. A little temperate weather makes a world of difference. The great depicters of the soul’s anguish - Ibsen, Dostoevsky, Kierkegard - were Northeners. Being deprived of light and heat soured them on the human condition. If those old boys had spent a little time looking after their tans on the Riviera, it might of given them a whole different point of view.
